Sea scallops are divided into two types: True sea scallops, plump-bodied animals that live on shallow sea beds around the world from Massachusetts down through South America; and deep water Atlantic sea scallops, which are generally fished out of the North Atlantic and don’t include Maine’s industry because they are prohibited by law from harvesting them.
